Camarattery is taking a month or two out each season where we will not be doing any breeding at all on those months.

Our Reasoning:

First off we don't need to breed every month. We only breed when there is a need. And that need is to better the rattery, and when we need to continue a line of rats and to strengthen them. Also our rats need time, time to play, time to grow, time to rest. Also it's good for a rattery to have times when no rats leave their rattery and no rats come into the rattery. It's a good time to evaluate your animals over all health. Kind of like a quarantine for a full month, but we're doing it every two to four months. This way we can ensure all my rats and their future babies will be in tip top condition. But just a reminder, if we take for example February off, we will still have babies available from the January breedings. So the month we will not have available litters would be March. Since that is the month we start putting pairs together again. So every time we take a month off, it's the following month that we will have no babies!

We don't have any sicknesses of any kind in my rattery so that's excellent! But a good breeder always has times when they can evaluate their animals. We want to keep up with the good health in the rattery. It is always good to be careful. The animals should always come first. And since making money is never important, (because breeding rats as a hobby never makes any, they may in fact make you go bankrupt) we can afford to have times to give the animals and ourselves a break. It's just a hobby and should be fun, not just for us but more importantly for our animals. This also gives us time to adopt out any babies that are still posted on the Nursery page.

We do not board rats during our months off as this is a quarantine time for the rattery. We also do not board during holiday's because we too have plans to be away with our family.

So February, June and August and December are officially "Rat Vacation & Play Time" here at Camarattery. Who knows we may add another month. These are the months we do not do any breeding's at all.

When Do Rats Breed At Their Best? And Why Does It Benefit Camarattery To Breed During That Time?

Rats typically slow down their breeding in the hot dog days of summer. Then as the weather cools they want to breed again. For the most part some will breed in the warmer weather but some don't, and sometimes litters don't take.

Because of this "slow season" rats decide to have er don't plan as many litters in the summer. Plus everyone is out recreating and no one wants to be tied down to rats in the house whilst they are on vacation, and we want to be out playing too! So once the rats decide to breed more and everyone wants a warm cuddle bug to snuggle with in the cooler months, that is when my breeding season picks up.

Usually for us our main breeding season begins in October and does it's best through May. After that we respect our months off and rest time and just enjoy a litter here and there and play with my sweeties most of the time! The only difference in the winter is that you will see more litters since they seem to "take" better when it's cooler.

Although we don't breed for anyone else needs or wants, we breed for what we need in our breeding program, we do need to have homes for every rat we don't plan to use for breeding stock. And we ONLY breed what I can easily adopt out!!! So we do take advantage of the season where the rats choose to breed more and also that co-insides with peoples natural urge to get cuddly animals in the cold season. This allows us to find good respectable homes for each and every rat we bring into this world without having to worry that there aren't enough people to adopt them. So... thank goodness for the rats deciding to breed at a good time! What good little animals we have....
