Note on temperament rating :...( this is for the breeder's amusement, no technical terms are used here)
His/ (Her) temperament is just perfectly lovely. = The perfect rat. You cannot get a mellower loving rat. Just absolutely stellar. Soaring above the sky, way above average. The best you can get.
Wonderful temperament. = Excellent in every way. Loves everyone. Above average. 2nd best you can get.
Good temperament. = A very good rat. Good pet rat for any age adopter. Average. 3rd best you can get.
Not yet rated...= I am still observing the rat and I don't know. But rats with bad temperaments will not be on my page because I don't work with rats like that here. Temperaments are genetic, so they are what you breed them to be.

Camarattery's Dwarf Rats

Camarattery introduced this state to our 1st dwarf rats in May of 2006.

Many of the rats on this page are dwarf some are only dwarf carriers. I have bred dwarf into all of my lines and will have dwarfs in every color and type I breed. Sometimes I breed just to get dwarf and sometimes I don't.

Dwarf is the newest type of rat and they aren't really out there in the public so to speak. They are very slow to breed and certainly take incredible amounts of time and patience to produce. There are also certain things to consider when adding them to your existing colony of rats. For one they are smaller and can't hold their own towards a much larger standard rat that is territorial.

Standard rats are adopted out at 5 weeks of age, but dwarf rats at 5 weeks of age are much more delicate and smaller in stature. I will be adopting dwarf babies out at 6 weeks of age to give them an extra week to "beef up" and not get lost amongst your other rats. Any time you get a dwarf and you are getting a sibling friend for him you will be taking the pair home at 6 weeks of age. All of the dwarf rats adopted from my rattery will be going home with a baby friend for him, so plan to wait until the ages are correct and they can go home together. Dwarf rats can be kept with standard rats as long as the standards are used to dwarfs and have been raise with them from infancy. Adult standard rats who have not seen a dwarf are better off not being caged with a dwarf.

Dwarf rats are just as healthy and long lived as the standard rats. There are no known health problems with them. They are as healthy as the standard rats that you breed them to, except that they cannot grow tumors because of them being growth hormone resistant. We still don't adopt them to children because they do not appreciate fast movements and or loud noises that children make. Unless the child is a veteran rat owner of several years and has a handle on how to care for rats. So they are recommended for adult adopters.

Myths about the dwarf rats are:

1) They live a shorter time.
2) Become obese with age.
3) They all have frail bone structures.
4) They have problems with their organs.

These are all false statements about dwarf rats.

True facts about dwarf rats are:

1) They have the same life expectancy as the standards you breed them to.
2) They have the same body weight ratio as the standards as per their size.
3) They have the exact same bone structure, tails, bodies ears, as the standard lines you breed them to. They are shaped the same.
4) There are no known health problems with dwarf rats.

I am one of the original 3 breeders who got dwarf rats. I have been breeding them for longer and I have more experience with them. There are scrawny dwarf rats out there with poor type and shorter life expectancy, but this is because the family of standard sized rats that was bred into them had this issue. This does not outline the normal tendencies for the dwarf rat. If you breed them to good rats with great health, type and temperament and life expectancy, your dwarfs will have all of these positive traits. They breed exactly the same as the standards in these regard. They are what you breed them to be. The only difference with the dwarf rats is their personality. And this is because they are at a disadvantage because of their size.

How Our Dwarf Rats Have Changed Since I Brought Them Here:

The patriarch of Colorado's Dwarfs

This is Colorado's 1st dwarf. All of the dwarf rats that have been legally born in Colorado from this rat are at my rattery. I have not adopted his family out to other Colorado rat breeders with breeding rights. He holds the title of Colorado's 1st dwarf agouti! I adopted him from a breeder in Arizona. Beau himself never bred for me but I had his children who did.
Here are his children:

Hooded seal pt Siamese w/HW head spot. Later adopted with a strict non breeding status contract. Retired.
Black Berk w/HW head spot. Later adopted with a strict non breeding status contract. Retired.
Black Berk w/HW head spot. Later adopted with a strict non breeding status contract. Retired.

These are Beau's children. They were all standard sized rats but they carried the dwarf gene from their father PNS Beau Duke. I adopted Them from Arizona along with their father Beau. Luke was bred to both of his sisters to produce Colorado's 1st born and bred dwarf rats!
Here they are:

Cama Dirty Deeds
Black Berkshire w/HW head spot. Still here and never bred. But he has big plans to be bred.
Cama Back In Black
Black Berkshire w/Hw head spot. Adopted to an Aurora rattery here in Colorado under strict contract not to be bred for the dwarf gene at the time she adopted him. This rat is has a non breeding status. If you see this rat in a pedigree, it was bred illegally.
Cama High Voltage
Black Berkshire w/HW head spot. Bred and in my pedigrees. Adopted out with strict non breeder rights contract. Retired.

Cama Thunderstruck
Seal Pt Siamese hooded. He has a very nice hooded pattern. He has an excellent temperament. Bred 3 times in my rattery. He is in my pedigrees and was shipped to Florida to LGMR rattery with breeding rights.
Cama Over Dose
Black Berkshire. Never bred and has since passed on.

This was Colorado's 1st generation of dwarf rats! All sired by Luke and his sisters WCRR April Cama and WCRR Daisy Cama. My next step in the evolution of Colorado's dwarf rats was to make better patterned and tempered dwarf rats.
And here they are:

Cama The Razors Edge
Seal Pt Himalayan Self Dwarf. Colorado's 1st dwarf Dumbo! Sent to GRIM Rattery in Vegas with a breeding contract. Grandson of Cama High Voltage.
Cama Inject The Venom
Black Irish. Adopted out with a non breeding contract. Lives with High Voltage. Grand daughter of Cama High Voltage.
Cama Riff Raff
Black Self Dwarf. Adopted out on a non breeding contract. Mother to one litter. Grand daughter of Cama Thunderstruck.

Cama Heatseeker
American Blue Irish. Fathered one litter here at my rattery. I sent him to SERR Rodentry in DE with full breeding rights. Grandson of Cama Thunderstruck.
Cama The Jack
American Blue Pt Siamese Irish. Sent to AZ to RAMR with breeding contract. Grandson of Cama Thunderstruck.
Cama Touch Too Much
Sable Burmese Berk. Fathered one litter here at my rattery. I sent him to SERR Rodentry in DE with full breeding rights. Grandson of Cama Thunderstruck.

Cama Little Lover
Burmese Hooded Dwarf. Sent to AZ RAMR with a breeding contract. Grand daughter of Cama Thunderstruck.
Cama Shakedown
American Blue Irish dwarf.
Sent to GRIM Rattery in Vegas with breeding contract. Grand son of Cama Thunderstruck.
Cama Live Wire
Seal Point Siamese Self Dwarf.Adopted out with non breeding contract. Grand Daughter of Cama Thunderstruck.

Cama First Blood
Black Berk Rex Dwarf. Colorado's first Rex dwarf rat, also the 1st Rex dwarf in recorded world history. Still here, mother 1 litter and produced the worlds 2nd Rex dwarf rats, 2 were in the litter. Grand daughter of Cama Thunderstruck.
Cama Badlands
Black Irish Dwarf Dumbo. Sent to GRIM Rattery in Vegas with a breeding contract. Grandson of Cama Thunderstruck.

So as you can see this last generation has improved in pattern aligning with my 2 specialty goals which are self and hooded. I am getting closer all the time! Temperaments have really improved since the 1st dwarf as well! They are very sweet now! Also my inbreeding percentages have gone way down. They started at 28% because they all came from the same rat and now the next generation will be in the 15%- 17% range because I have been breeding my standard rats into the dwarf lines to improve them and keep them less and less related. They still need work to get them where I want them which is self, hooded and dumbo. But with the help of the new rats from RRLM and RAMR who I got new dwarf blood from I will be so much closer to my goals in 2008! I do plan to breed for the Burmese hooded gene with my dwarf rats, I was very pleasantly surprised with the one I did get this time around. It is a very beautiful combination. They are not accepted in the show just yet but still very beautiful nonetheless.

Also it will still be quite some time before I have dwarf dumbos available. The wait list is not being generated for those yet as I don't have the genes for it.

The next generation is here! And they have gotten so much better!

Cama Back In Business
American blue Irish Dwarf carries dumbo.
Great grand daughter of Cama Thunderstruck. Adopted out non breeding contract.
Cama High Water
Black Berkshire Dumbo Dwarf.
Colorado's very 1st female dumbo dwarf. Great Grand daughter of Cama Thunderstruck. Mothered one litter and adopted out with a non breeding contract.

I am very happy with this generation of dwarfs! They are either dumbo or carry it. I will add more from this generation as I get pictures.

Info About Dwarf Rats

Dwarf rats are completely resistant to several types of cancer. Because they are growth hormone deficient they also cannot develop many cancers as well. So this is great news for rat fanciers! Not only do dwarfs live as long as the larger rats but they have almost no risk of getting of cancer.

There is not a good resource for finding info about dwarf rats, and since I am responsible for bringing dwarf rats into Colorado it is my intent to provide that information.

More info to come.......

Just how big or small is a dwarf rat?

A Question For You

All Of Camarattery's Rats Are Registered Through:

At times I may have a few rats that are marked with a "" above the name. I will post pix after they grow a bit so they can finish molting. This way you can see what they will look like as an adult.

To see "Our Specialties" page click here. This will give you a break down of what we specialize in and breed for.

*D/C = Dumbo Carrier

My different lines are only bred together with their same line. This is called "line breeding". For example I will only breed my "Dumbo Self Line" females to my "Dumbo Self Line" males. Some rats are used as an "out cross". This means that, this rat is used to compliment a line of rats and bring in new blood, that rat is half of this line and half of another line. So that rat will be bred into my lines and have babies that are related to my lines. This type of  line breeding strengthens the animals. It locks in great health, temperament, and excellent confirmation. It makes them stronger in every way.  It also allows me to test my lines to make sure there are no weaknesses ie.... tumors bad immune systems poor bone structure and bad body shape. So it allows me to weed out any potential problems. And as a result I am left with nothing but strong healthy beautiful animals.  It is rare for me to "inbreed" (brother sister breeding's). However, that is a great way to occasionally "beef up" a line, if need be.

For a list of my rats weight scale click here.

Note on the High White marked line: They can easily be bred to any rat of any other pattern. At times I will breed them to a hooded, Self or a Berkshire. Any pattern breeds well with the marked rats and it's healthy for the line to be out crossed in this manner. So for this line I will not stick to strictly breeding them to only "their own line". I may just pick a mate from any line to do a breeding when dealing with the marked rats.
